Since 2001, Orlando’s Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals have trusted Lotus Management Services to provide managed IT services. Arnold Palmer Hospital for Children is a member of Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals and relies on this local charity to provide the best in class care every day in an environment that is child-friendly and comforting for the entire family.

Children’s Miracle Network staff work with partners to support to save and improve the lives of as many as 136,000 children per year at Arnold Palmer Hospital for Children. Some of these activities involve setting up temporary off-site networks for events such as the Mix 105.1 Loves Our Kids Radiothon. Lotus Management Services manages the staff network as well as building out and supporting these remote off-site networks.

Due to the large volume of donor data, cyber-security is of the utmost priority. Lotus Management Services uses the most advanced systems available today for small businesses to protect donor data. The Lotus team also employs advanced network monitoring and management to look for potential trouble-spots to ensure around-the-clock network availability and security.

CCleaner Infection

It may have gotten lost in all the big news this past couple of weeks, but the popular computer cleaning utility CCleaner was infected.

On September 12th the makers of CCleaner discovered that a version included code which allowed the software to report computer information to a 3rd party computer server. The information included…

  • Computer name
  • IP address
  • List of installed software
  • List of active software
  • List of network adapters

The only version affected was 5.33.6162. The software company was able to shut down the 3rd party server with the assistance of US law enforcement. An updated version of the software has been released and offered to users.

CCleaner is a popular software choice to clean up a computer and it is an effective tool. Lotus Management Services does not install the tool by default and rarely uses it. Based on our records we haven’t utilized the software since version 5.33.6162 was released. We have ran a scan of all managed workstations and confirmed it is not installed on any workstations.

If you are using CCleaner be sure that you are upgraded to the latest versions which at the time of writing this article is CCleaner version 5.34 and CCleaner Cloud version 1.07.3214.

April Fools Jokes

Tomorrow is April 1st and of course April Fool’s Day. No one knows the origin, but it is believed to be more than 500 years old. It seems to be a national holiday at Google, but other companies have rolled out some great tricks. Here are some of our favorites…

Gmail Paper

Back in 2007 Internet citizens were convinced that Google could do just about anything with technology. Google’s Gmail group parlayed this into a great prank that you could receive all your email in paper form delivered to your door. The site has long-been taken down, but it outlined how you would receive your emails printed, stacked neatly in a box, and shipped to your front door.

Left-Handed Whopper

In 1998 Burger King took out a full-page ad in USA Today announcing their newest menu item. The Left-Handed Whopper had the condiments rotated 180 degrees so that the weight of the burger skewed to the left.

In 1957 the button-up British Broadcasting Company pulled a very elaborate prank. They sent a film crew to Switzerland to file this three-minute video demonstrating that spaghetti actually comes from trees.

Taco Bell Liberty Bell

Taco Bell got in on the fun by purchasing full-page ads in six major American newspapers proclaiming they had purchased the Liberty Bell in Philadelphia. The ruse was staged as an effort to help lower the national debt. People freaked out. They lit up the phone lines at Taco Bell corporate headquarters as well as the National Park Service. Later in the day at Noon, Taco Bell released a press release to quiet the discontent or to just pull more free publicity out of the idea.

DocuSign Virus

We have an alert especially for our Real Estate and Mortgage professionals. There is a virus that mimics an email from DocuSign. If it is opened in Outlook it perform several steps…
1. It harvests all of your contact email addresses
2. The fake DocuSign is sent to all of your contacts from you
3. It then deletes all your contacts
4. The last step is that it creates a rule to route all email to your junk folder so you don’t notice what has happened to your email

5 Ways to Stay Safe on Cyber-Monday

Today has become known as cyber-Monday. This is the day online retailers roll out their holiday shopping deals but in reality many got started last Wednesday. I guess that is the plus to being open 24/7 anywhere. There are a few safety tips as you hit the interwebs to do some shopping.

  1. Stick to trusted sites. Try to stick to web site that look legit. There are a lot of scammers trying to take advantage of the shopping frenzy.
  2. Look for security before you enter your credit card. Be sure the site features the small padlock in the browser address bar to indicate you are entering your info into a secure site.
  3. Use unique logins. Don’t reuse the same password for each web site that you use for Facebook or email account. The reason this is a good idea is that if the retailer ever gets breached by a hacker your password won’t be publicly available. A great resource is LastPass.
  4. Keep an eye on your bank and credit card accounts. Be on the lookout for odd expenditures that you don’t remember. Investigate and contact your bank or credit card issuer as soon as possible.
  5. Avoid suspicious links. This is a popular time of the year for fishing scams. Because of the increased shopping activity users are more apt to click on email links requesting they confirm their account information.

Stay safe and shop away. Just be sure you get some work done, too.

End of Daylight Savings Time

Just a reminder that Daylight Savings Time will end on Sunday, November 4th at 2:00 AM. Don’t forget to turn your clocks back on Saturday night and gain your one hour of extra sleep. Also don’t forget to check your devices and computers on Sunday morning to confirm they have adjusted their time. Most modern operating systems will not have a problem, but older devices and operating systems such as Windows 2000 could have issues.
